UK Review - ''One That Got Away'' 2004

When Green Eyed Soul was released in Britain last May, it represented a feat of willpower for Lari White. She'd already released some country albums in Nashville, but feeling increasingly uncomfortable with Music City's crossover-bimbo stereotype, White retreated to record the music she felt comfortable making, initially releasing the album on her own Skinny WhiteGirl label.

Although the songs are solidly rooted in southern soul and gospel, White has floated them over spacey trip-hop beats and made sure her cool, clear voice and warm electric piano are mixed well forward, lending an absorbing immediacy to standouts like "Eden Before the Fall" or "Nothing But Love".

The deep-soul confessional of "Groove W/ Me Baby" misfires, but the best tracks distil the emotions and experiences of an adult woman who couldn't keep pretending to be a girl.
